LFC Brighton

Fried chicken delivered, and have to say, very well done. The true test of fried chicken delivery is the chips. Hot? Or cold and soggy? Difficult to achieve.  LFC, who in fairness are very close to my house, did very well. Nuggets, popcorn chicken, chips, garlic bread, all good.

Verdict: Awesome

The Victory Inn

Cool old-school tiled facade to this pub; walk in and the first impression wasn’t great (figured one of those stripped down boozers).  But that was wrong – grab your beer and go behind the bar and there’s a really nice seating area with maps on the wall. Didn’t try, but the menu is full of pub classics and looks great.

Verdict: Awesome

Hell’s Kitchen

Great little funky deli in the heart of North Laine. Really nice people in there; tried a cheese and a cheese and bacon latke, both delicious, especially with recommended mustard/mayo combo. Vast blackboard of interesting looking deli sandwiches too!

Smorl’s Houmous

Specialist houmous maker in Brighton’s Open Market; wide variety of interesting looking flavours. Tried the original, more citrus than I’m used to, but pretty tasty. So a win, but quite expensive; haven’t yet decided if it’s worth it. Must try more. Also do proper meals which want trying!

Verdict: Ok

Milk No Sugar

Interesting Vietnamese cafe – usual coffees and sandwiches but also Vietnamese food like banh mi. Had the latter with pork and hoi sin, and it was pretty great, and really rather cheap.

The Funkyfish Club

Highly random bar and club that feels like a cheap hotel bar. Went down to Throwback Fridays and had a good dance, and it got surprisingly lively once 11pm hit. So not bad really; points also off for absence of 80s music on a retro night!

Verdict: Ok

Polpo

Brighton outpost of a Venetian “bacaro” chain – think small plates. Food was tasty for sure, especially fried gnocchi and the meatballs.  Oh, and chocolate salami dessert (slices of a fondant/biscotti/fruit mix – hard to explain!).  Unfortunately service was very poor and we really struggled to get any – perhaps an off night – and the place, perhaps due to success, is crammed with tables and thus unpleasantly loud.

Verdict: Ok

Archipelagos

Cosy Greek restaurant, nice but nothing fancy decor-wise, but extremely friendly and helpful staff, and a delicious mezedakia (mezze!) menu. Especially recommend ktipiti – mashed feta with olive oil, oregano and paprika. Lovely meal and actually very reasonably priced.

Verdict: Awesome
