Mowgli

A difficult one this as a lot to love. First, if Mowgli was a cocktail bar it would be top of my Brighton list straight away – genuinely some of the top cocktails I’ve ever had (mango chilli margarita amazing) at good prices. Service is lovely and the space itself is too – we had swing seats which was fun. And some tasty dishes – Himalayan cheese on toast and chats especially. The downside is much of the food was just too sweet. Sticky chicken claimed to be crunchy was not, and just cloyingly sweet, similarly with the tamarind fries. Paneer curry too sweet also; if you go, check what is a curry and what isn’t, as we expected a potato dish to be potatoes rather than curry – it was actually one of the better dishes but we needed some rice.

Verdict: Ok

Palmito

I really enjoyed the small plates at Palmito; the fried squash with sage and honey a particular highlight, great service, and I think very reasonably priced. That’s probably factoring in the fact that it is, as advertised, tiny, and you’re squeezed in very close to other people. For me that holds it back from greatness as it takes away from what would otherwise be a chilled experience.

Verdict: Awesome

Tutto

The fourth restaurant from the Salt Room team, an Italian small plate situation. Really enjoyed it. Cracking service, really beautiful food and cocktails. Incredible fried vegetables in particular but mushroom risotto also a highlight. Points against would be you do pay for it, not dramatically but noticeably. Also I think it’s only worth sitting at the counter, as the other tables I feel are too packed in for what they’re charging (a sin committed by sister resto the Coal Shed). But definitely a top Brighton resto straight away.

Burger Dudes

I was actually going to give these guys a little bit of a pass for delivery, because the burger looked delicious, but was just ok, similarly fries looked great and the garlic pizza bread smelled like it was going to be amazing. It was all more or less ok, the pizza bread tending to good but the fries cold. So I thought ah, I’ll try them at the Font – because one strong point in their favour is they are very well priced. But it turns out that although they are based at the Font, they’re not actually the food at the Font; they’re delivery only. So it’s just Ok, better burger options availabile.

Verdict: Ok
